The Best & Worst Bathroom Trends of 2021 & What to expect in 2022.

Celebrating the end of 2021, and looking forward to a year of new designs, trends and aesthetics, it’s time to reflect on the trends that have come and gone in the past 12 months.

A bathroom is a place of relaxation and rejuvenation. It’s a place to take care and feel good about yourself, from a hot shower to a well-lit vanity to fresh flowers in a vase. A bathroom should also reflect the interior design style and atmosphere desired for your house or apartment. This year we’ve seen interior design trends rise and fall, from the rise of bathroom acrylic panels, bathroom plants to jewel tones and back-lit mirrors. There have been trends that will continue to grow in popularity in the next year, and some that need to be forgotten about ASAP. Here are the top bathroom trends, good and bad, from 2021.

The best bathroom design trends of 2021

Some of our favourite bathroom trends of 2021 involved greenery, and nature, long may it live in 2022 we say! at Easy Panels, we loved the whole simplistic yet lively concept of plants, greenery and nature in the bathroom. They brought to live even the dull-est rooms and were definitely a cheap form of furnishing.

Bringing nature indoors:

As the world becomes more connected and as technology evolves, people are beginning to look for ways to bring the outside in. The trend of bringing nature into your home is becoming increasingly popular to improve the air quality of your home and to brighten up your space with some greenery.

.

The bathroom is the perfect place for plants, house plants that thrive in moist and damp environments are ideal to place in your shower or bath area and low maintenance succulents such as Aloe Vera are a great way to add colour and even texture to your space without making major design changes. Bathroom plants are an ideal budget bathroom makeover, they are cheap to purchase and completely change the aesthetic of your space. Go from a plain and simple bathroom to a vibrant oasis, plants are one of our favourite bathroom trends of 2021! We look forward to the prospects of greenery furnishing in 2022.

Best Bathroom Plants:

  • Pilea Peperomioides
  • Aloe Vera
  • Snake Plant
  • Monstera
  • Ivy
  • Watermelon Peperomia
  • Bamboo
  • Heart Leaf Philodendron
  • Peace Lily
  • Fiddle Leaf Fig

Eco-friendly:

Caring for our planet is essential, so making small and ethical changes where we can it’s important to create an eco-friendly environment in every aspect of your life. This includes incorporating sustainable materials like bamboo and recycled plastic into our bathrooms.

From bamboo toothbrushes to natural loofah sponges and dental floss, bathroom design has become more than just the colour of your walls, gold taps and walk-in showers. Even your appliances are a huge part of your bathroom design. Bamboo appliances aren’t just eco friendly but add to the overall feel and design of your space with their rustic and minimalist features.

Reclaimed pieces:

Reusing an existing piece from the past or repurposing something formally loved by a friend or family member is a popular trend that has grown in popularity in recent years. This particular trend can include anything from restoring furniture to using reclaimed tiles on a new project.

Whether you’re looking for a one of a kind bathroom stool or vintage tiles to make a statement in your space, reclaiming pre-used pieces are a great way to make a unique bathroom space without overspending and going over budget.

Floating Vanities:

One trend that we have loved this year is the rise of floating vanities. They can be designed and customised to fit any style and size of bathroom. Whether you want a large vanity with two sinks, extensive storage and countertop space or you simply want a space saving solution with a simple sink and storage; floating vanities are a stylish as well as practical option to lift your bathroom design.

They also make the perfect ‘getting ready’ space. The floating design of the vanity means you can fit a chair or stool comfortably under the countertop. This makes for a plush area to dry your hair, shave, apply make-up and skincare.

Back-lit mirrors:

Back-lit mirrors are a great way to utilise space and create a stunning feature, particularly in small bathrooms. Back-lit mirrors create a glowing effect on a wall giving an illusion of a floating mirror. We’re all about embedded features in 2021! The embedded back-lit mirror offers ambient lighting, making it a great focal point and a great way to highlight textured wall or tile in your bathroom space.

Warm colours:

2021 marked the return of warm colour and jewel tones to our bathroom spaces. Emerald green and deep blue have proved popular bathroom colours over the past year, adding depth and warmth to even the coldest of bathrooms. If you’re looking to create a statement with your bathroom design, this is the way to go. Deep, warm colours paired with a bold and patterned wallpaper gives an extravagant and charismatic character to your space. Warm colours can now be an incredibly inexpensive way to design and decorate your bathroom, using marble style wall panels is a fantastic way of decorating your bathroom at less cost.

Quartz countertops:

Quartz is one of the most resilient natural materials, it is resistant to scratching and staining and is easy to maintain compared to other natural materials such as marble that can scratch easily and requires intense maintenance.

Quartz dominated 2021 bathroom trends, they are a non-porous surface making them perfect for damp environments like bathrooms and their light finish provides the perfect accompaniment to the warm and jewel colour trend.

The worst bathroom design trends of 2021

The “fragrant bathroom” trend:

We get it you want your bathroom to smell amazing, just like your house does. But having your walls and surfaces scented can cause severe allergic reactions in some people and also may cause irritation to those with asthma or other respiratory conditions. Stick with air fresheners, decorative candles and even some incense to give your space a homely and fresh smell.

Oversized bathtubs:

Oversized bathtubs make a great statement in any bathroom, but in terms of everyday practicalities; they are space consuming and take away from the delicate features of your bathroom.

If you have a large bathroom then we see the appeal and an oversized bathtub could even be a practical design choice in that instance. However, generally oversized tubs take up a significant amount of space as well as a lot of water wastage. If you want to make a statement in your bathroom why not go for a wet room or walk-in shower feature, this is a more cost effective and practical option particularly if you have a busy household.

Chevron Patterned Tiles:

Chevron patterned tiles are a great statement piece, they add texture and even colour to your bathroom. However, they don’t quite have that timeless appeal. Tiles are an expensive material to source and install. So, if you’re going to take the plunge and invest in tiles, go for something timeless like a stone or glossy tile.

Granite Countertops:

Granite countertops have been used for years in public spaces such as toilets, restaurants, bars and pubs and recently made their way into homes. Granite adds a hint of texture and colour and is a great addition to any bathroom. However, for a more modern minimalist look going into 2022 let’s opt for quartz countertops. Quartz is easy to maintain, non-porous and even scratch proof, what more could you ask for?

Cold colour schemes:

Let’s leave what’s remaining of cold solar schemes in 2021. Light shades of blue, green, yellow have no place in bathroom design. A bathroom should feel clean, cosy and minimalist. While cold colours do give off a minimalist vibe, they tend to make your space feel just that… cold.

All-White Design:

Again, an all-white design is extremely minimalist and can create a beautiful bathroom. However, it can give off a clinical look and feel. If you’re not about bold and rich colours and/or patterns in your bathroom, why not add some greenery to your all-white space. This will add some warmth and homely feel to your bathroom, particularly if you live in a colder climate.

Conclusion

The bathroom is a place of relaxation and rejuvenation. Make sure that your bathroom reflects the interior design style and atmosphere desired for your house or apartment by incorporating these trends into your next bathroom remodel.
